Have a lovely weekend!

What are you up to this weekend? Toby turns two on May 25th (here's a photo of him as a newborn!), but we've having his birthday party this weekend. It's an afternoon picnic with pizza, and strawberries on popsicle sticks. I'm excited, and he definitely knows something's up. Have a great one, and here are a few fun posts from around the web...

A nine-year-old writes a blog about school lunches.

Whoa. Now those are high-waisted pants.

Pinup style is back.

Biking to the supermarket!

Ice eggs for little dudes.

How common is your birthday? (Apparently people have more sex in the winter:)

Rad home makeover.

Just got this red colorblock bag for the summer.

This lion is part of the family.

How to photograph a newborn.

Moist chicken every time.

Salads for dinner.

Make your own colorblock flats.

A beautifully honest post about struggling with infertility.

  1. I will be studying all weekend for my exams. Oh, but it's just another couple of weeks and I'm done. Have a lovely weekend!

(btw. love that pinup style is back. Maybe that comes with the more natural and healthy body shapes of the 50's too.)

  2. Love the bags and the bike, would love to DIY my own but all the supermarkets now have those electronic brakes that prevent you from, ahem, borrowing them.

Have a great weekend too, and happy birthday to Toby :)

  3. OMG, so I looked up that LIFE spread about the lion. Did you know that was Melanie Griffith's family? I never knew that about her! Even freakier, at one point when Tippi Hedren, Griffith's mother, was directing 'Roar' in 1973, and the lions on that film set (not the lion in the LIFE photo spread) scalped - yes, SCALPED - Jan de Bont and injured Melanie and her father Noel Marshall. What on earth is with people trying to tame wild animals? So freaky!!

  8. that birthday chart is fascinating. i guess my birthday (9/30) isn't as special as i once thought...the whole last two weeks of september are blacked out!

  9. I love playing "why is your birthday the day it is?" game. One time we guessed that a friends' parents probably went camping over Labor Day and found out later from his mom that that was totally what happened. That chart is utterly fascinating!

    Happy early Birthday to Toby!

Ha! Those pants are absurd! I can't even imagine my husband's reaction if I came home wearing those! :D
I love the lunch blog (what a clever kid!) and the birthday chart, although I have to say I'm surprised that more people are apparently making babies in the wintertime...I for one feel much sexier in the summer. (Sorry, is that TMI?)

Mine in November is very uncommon.

Apparently, people do NOT have as much sex in the deepest, darkest, coldest parts of the winter/early spring (which is still really winter in northern climes.)

  28. Happy Friday Joanna, and happy birthday Toby.

As for the 'salty' comment from Alison, pffft, don't get so uppity over a link. Joanna is great about crediting where credit is due, I'm sure no disrespect to you was intended!

  30. Ha! I grew up on a farm and we used to freeze carrots, apples, etc., for cows and horses in a big brick of ice... never thought to do it for my kids. Awesome!

Omg, those pants are too funny. So ridiculous! I love the home makeover. Gorgeous color (and I'm not generally a fan of blue.) And, those ice eggs are too cool. I'm going to have to try that with my kids this summer. They would have so much fun with that.

The lion in the family photo spread is just horrible though. Despicable. Wild animals deserve to be WILD ANIMALS! They are not, and should never be, pets. If they need to be in a sanctuary for some reason, they should still be treated as naturally as possible. They need space, nature, and freedom.

    Hi Joanna,

    I just came by a new blog and I instantly thought of you;

    www.susannekaluza.com

She's a Norwegian journalist who writes about everyday life with children in Scandinavia and much more. I'm not affiliated in any way, but I remembered your previous posts about scandinavian parenting and such, and just had to pop by and leave a comment!

    Love your blog :)

    Have a nice weekend!

ahaha more sex in winter... that's a good one! But actually, not every country in the world is cold at that time... I think you'd find the increase in births around September is due to the holiday season, not the temperature.

@ alison and divya... you don't own the image, so nobody has to credit you at all. Crazy talk!

Also, it appears on other blogs months before it appears on yours... have you given those blogs credit? Doubt it.

  40. The lion is so cute.. A bit scary, because I've watched too many of those shows where wild animals kept as pets turn on their owners. But a sweet set of images for sure!

And those are pants are a bit TOO high-waisted.. they make me giggle!

Also, I just have to let you know that as a long time reader whose mouse tends to wander the page as I'm browsing, the P&G Future Friendly ad on the right is pretty irritating. It blasts sound every time I accidentally roll my mouse over it and startles me!

  41. those LIFE lion photos are amazing! do you happen to know what issue/year those photos are from? I can't believe the picture of the lion sleeping in bed with the child...I'd be so scarred!

Will definetely do ice eggs with my daughter, what a great idea for a hot summer day. This bike project is weird, I wouldn't go for it, but bithday chart seemed interesting. It appears I was born in the right season in summer :)

I once saw on TV that it's not that people have more sex in winter, but that women are more likely to conceive during colder times, so their babies are born during warmer times and are more likely to survive.
