A few years ago, for New York Magazine, I interviewed kids about having lemonade stands in New York City. They were so hilarious and crafty! Their tricks to increase sales included purposefully misspelling "lemonade" on their signs and telling people's fortunes. One brother-sister team made $240! Read the story here, if you'd like.
And these photos by photographer Joanna Ebenstein made me laugh. She passed two boys in Park Slope, Brooklyn, selling bacon panini, of all things! And at $3 a pop. Haha, only in NYC.

ReplyDeleteI hope you had a grand time in Amsterdam. I just moved to the UK and am planning on dragging my husband to Amsterdam and then Belgium in late Sept/ early Oct for Autumn.
ReplyDeleteChildren are so inventive. We often go to Columbia Road flower market on Sundays (in London) and there are a couple of kids who sell cup cakes, nick-nacks anything they don't want! - on their front door step. Love it.

Last summer I even made my husband turn the car around and go back after we passed one (he wasn't particularly thrilled to make a u-turn, but I think the sweet little girls made his heart melt when we got out of the car). What a fun interview!

ReplyDeletethis post reminds me of the other day, on my walk to our apartment from the bus. two little boys down my block had a lemonade stand set up. when i was still at the opposite end of the block, one ran all the way down to me and asked "do you want some lemonade!?" i said i did, and asked how much it was. he said, "well, it's 25 cents, unless you don't have any money. then it's free." break-your-heart-adorable. even more, i noticed there were two cups with a little money in each. i asked which i was supposed to put it in. they said, "well this one is for charity, and this one is for sales. so you can decide which one you put your money in." :')
I sould love to have this age and enjoy time like that !!!!

Oh, dear- I'm using the comments box not to remark on cute kids and lemonade stands, but to implore you NOT to use those video ads that just start playing w/ the audio... Yikes! Those are the WORST. And 2 of them?! Really, the lowest form of internet advertising, in my opinion. Just sharing some feedback. I sincerely hope they do not make a regular appearance on my favorite blog. XO

ReplyDeleteI love the idea of lemonade stands, for the kids. It gives them a sense of purpose, and they love doing it. What I hate is the whole new thing that they now have to have permits to do such a thing.

ReplyDeleteCute and such a coincidence! Over the weekend, I was riding a bike to check out the massive garage sales in my boyfriend's neighborhood. That's where I encountered two little brothers with delightful English accents who were selling lemonade for $1 at their family's garage sale. I bought a little Dixie cup full of the cool, lemony liquid. I found out I was their first customer! They were shy with me, but I had heard them talking among themselves regarding why they hadn't had any customers. They even played with my dollar bill afterward, pretending to be customers to their own stand. It was still early in the morning and already hot outside, so hopefully they got more customers!

I live on the Balboa peninsula in Newport Beach California and on the fourth of July (where the peninsula is pedestrian and bikes only and FILLED with vacationers and partiers) my 8 and 6 year old neighbors sell hot dogs, water, and otter pops to all of the visitors who only thought to bring alcohol. they make a killing every year! i'll suggest Panini's this year :)

Love this. Was visiting NYC a few years ago when some kids were having a garage sale/sidewalk sale of their toys. Being from Iowa, I thought this was hilarious, seeing their blanket on the side walk with toys for sale. :)

I remember doing lemonade stalls like this when I was younger, and I actually remember this one time when my little sister and I made a sign saying 'all the money goes to charity'. When people asked what charity it was, we made up one! Yes, I feel a little guilty about that now actually.....

The kids I babysit set up a lemonade stand last summer! They made $7 and it was a BIG deal :). Keep a look out for the cuties on the corner of Jones and Bleecker this summer!
