Edward Mapplethorpe

How amazing are Edward Mapplethorpe's children's portraits? The New York photographer takes portraits of one-year-olds sitting up (he insists that the shoot happen right around their first birthday). Interestingly, instead of giving the parents a big selection to choose from, he shows only one or two frames from the shoot (pretty bold), but apparently the parents have always been thrilled. Not hard to see why. (That first little dude kills me.)

P.S. Ridiculously adorable baby profiles and newborns.

  5. I really like it when photographers let the baby's personality shine through instead of trying to make them laugh and smile. SO cute!

  6. these are great! i agree with maggie, they def feel like fine art than baby photos.

So wonderful, I want one! (a baby, not a random babies portrait- haha. I think the parents would think that is creepy)

    Thanks for sharing Joanna!

  11. Aw, these are amazing! Yes that is bold but with pics that good it's easy to see why he does it that way. Your little bundle of joy is coming so soon! My vote is May 30, my birthday. It's such a great day to have a birthday!

  52. aww, i love their fuzzy new hair. i've been afraid to have professional photos of leon done because there aren't too many who will do straight photography. these are pretty much what i'd want. i also spend a lot of time obsessing about who leon resembles. his looks keep changing, and sometimes i'll see an expression that is pure matthew. so hilarious, and probably more entertaining than tv and movies combined!

  54. I"m so happy you posted these Joanna.

Ours has quickly become one of our most prized possessions. one of the things that doesn't translate online is the scale of the images--they are huge-24 x 20, larger than life (especially in a smallish bklyn apartment). Evander recognizes himself in the image and gets excited too.
