Dear readers, I think we may have developed our first real blog slang: Le sigh. Lately, bloggers everywhere have been using this cute phrase--usually when they feel bummed or can't afford something. It's all over the web! Do you use "le sigh"? Don't you love its cute French vibe?(Photo by Jen Altman)

Yes that's the perfect little phrase!
ReplyDeletethis isnt new! ive been sayign this for years! :)
ReplyDeleteha ha!! I have never used this phrase but I love it ..le sigh :-)
ReplyDeleteI agree - "le sigh".
ReplyDeleteI do say *le sigh* quite often. On my blog and in real life. I guess we charming female bloggers are all alike. :)
ReplyDeleteThere is nothing to describe that feeling of not being able to afford something than a good 'le sigh'. ;)
ReplyDeleteNO offense and as cute as that baby is...LE (fill in the blank) is a little bit dated. I'm iffy on it. SORRY!
ReplyDeleteteehee it's from pepe le pew
ReplyDeletei do not say le sigh. it makes me think of pepe le pew. i have said le cute, once, though, and i felt a little weird afterward.
ReplyDeletesweet photo!
ReplyDeletei'll start using it cuz i'm a follower.
ReplyDeleteTotally, I love saying it. And ditto raquellabella, learned it from pepe le pew as a kid!
ReplyDeleteMy boyfriend has a drawing of a cat at his desk and I drew a little beret on him and wrote in a speech bubble "le mew!" and we find that to be the funniest thing on earth because we are Giant Nerds.
It's cute, although I'm still waiting for the day when "das sigh" or "uno sigh" becomes trendy...
ReplyDeletethat's just the cutest little baby ever!!
ReplyDeleteYes... I admit to le sighing several times on my blog. Only reserved for the most swoon-worthy things of course.

Ez
ah mais oui! ;)
ReplyDeleteI've been saying "le sigh" for about six years. My high school friends and I discovered the video it comes from (link below) when you tube was first taking off. watch the video- it's pretty funny :)

Hmm. I thought I left a message but perhaps I didn't hit the right key. I hate to disagree with such lovely people, but it's twee for "official." Perhaps semi-? Just a thought from a bilingual...there is a lot of 'le cringing' about this & such a sophisticated blog doesn't deserve a cringe.
ReplyDeletewow, more controversial than i had thought! le interesting.
ReplyDeleteI have been using just plain sigh forever, but i sort of like the little french twist on it...may start slipping that in my blog here and there!
ReplyDeleteomg rachel that is the funniest video ever!! i was lol-ing all the way through. so funny. i'm going to post it now, thank you!
ReplyDeleteI do say "le sigh" but it wasn't until you mentioned it that I realized that I do typically only say it when I can't afford something! haha

i already feel self-conscious about using 'love' and 'lovely'. beautiful baby.
ReplyDeletei agree with miss kolleen, I too have been saying this for years.
ReplyDeletenot exactly sure where I got it from though, I'm the only one I know that says it.
My sister and I have been saying this since high school, and my 20 year reunion is this year! It originated from Pepe LePew, a croissant shop, and our original phrase, "Le duh." Related: Le beep-beep (excuse me), Le wow, and Le barf.
ReplyDeleteWhat can I say? We're totally continental, dude.
it's a great phrase, but I agree-- bloggers didn't invent it.. they've just adopted..
ReplyDeleteI use that phrase all the time. It makes me smile after I say it at work or school over something that previously had me feeling down.
ReplyDeleteha, never... it is cute. le cutest.
ReplyDeleteReminds me of Jim Holt's perfect joke: "Pretentious, moi?"

whoa, people are very defensive over their use of the term first! haha. I just re-read my comment and realized I meant to say that I learned it from pepe le pew as a kid, but only recently started saying it. I had no idea it was so wide-spread.
ReplyDeleteOh, I'm definitely a fan of "le sigh". Although, I do get strange looks when I SAY it haha!
ReplyDeleteI don't say "le sigh" but I do "sigh" a lot in my posts. I like "le sigh". Tres bon!
ReplyDeletei never say it out loud, but i definitely have been known to type it. so funny how much the blogosphere impacts my daily life!
ReplyDeleteI've been saying it for years too, but I have always used to to convey overwhelmingly loveliness.
ReplyDeleteah, le sigh. count me as another saying-it-for-years-inspired-by-pepe-lepew-er. it's cutesy, sure, but not annoyingly so.
ReplyDelete"das sigh" and "uno sigh" totally crack me up. maybe I'll try to start that trend...
i agree as i often sigh.... over a hermes birkin. why can't i have one in every color of the rainbow... sigh....
ReplyDeleteWow, I'm totally out of the loop. I've never heard of it before. Is it something that's being beaten to death? I guess I just say "oh well." Boring but effective :)
ReplyDeleteHow cute! I have actually never heard anyone use this phrase before, but maybe I should start!
ReplyDeleteCare to trade links?

I dont say le sigh, but i do seem to let out these really loud actual sighs at work! Someone will ask me what's wrong, and then I realize I must be sighing!
ReplyDeleteAs for "le mew" I love it! In my case it would be "le woof" -- when i was in montreal recently i ran across a little silver dog charm that read "wouf" -- it's on my desk now!
And no one should feel bad about saying lovely. It's a lovely expression.
Nope, I don't say that. If I can't afford something then I just say a good ol' fashion cuss word!
ReplyDeleteI dont say it and it kinda annoys me.. no offense to all those who say it!
ReplyDeleteI just used it and I love it. I think I'll use it again....
ReplyDeletepour moi, c'est un mot qui resemble un "coup de foudre" (love at first sight). I love using *le sigh* for the things I fall in love with and want to buy. xo
ReplyDeletele sigh, is very pepe le pew, non?
